Four Safety Tips to Remember This Holiday Season

The holiday season is a wonderful time with twinkling lights and festive gatherings. But it can also bring increased risks, from fire hazards to slips, trips, and even break-ins. At Thomas, Harrison & Associates, we want you to have a safe and joyful holiday. Here are some practical tips to help you protect what matters most.

1. Light Responsibly

  • Before hanging any holiday lights, inspect each strand for frayed wires, cracked sockets, or broken bulbs. Damaged lights can create a serious fire or electrical hazard, so replace anything that looks worn or faulty.

  • Always turn off all indoor and outdoor lights before going to bed or leaving your home. Using timers can make this easier and help reduce the risk of electrical fires while keeping your home festive and safe.

2. Deck the Halls (Safely)

  • If you have a real Christmas tree, water it daily to keep it fresh. A dry tree can become highly flammable, so regular watering is key to reducing fire risk.

  • Place your tree at least three feet away from fireplaces, heaters, candles, or any other heat sources. This keeps your tree safe while still letting everyone enjoy its festive glow.

3. Candle & Fireplace Caution

  • Never leave burning candles unattended — use flameless candles when possible, and check that you have extinguished any flames before leaving the home.

  • Have your fireplace inspected and cleaned before using it for the season. Unwanted leaves, moss, and build-up can be a cause of house fires.

4. Avoid Trip Hazards & Falls

  • Keep cords, wires, and extension cables away from walkways and high-traffic areas. If you must run cords across a floor, secure them with tape or protective covers to prevent guests from tripping.

  • Use a proper ladder or step stool for decorating instead of chairs or boxes. Make sure the ladder is stable and always have someone nearby to assist if needed.

By taking a few simple precautions, you can keep your home safe while enjoying all the holiday cheer. Stay mindful, plan ahead, and make this season merry, bright, and worry-free!
